Soilfix was employed by a leading Power Sector client to undertake decommissioning and remediation works to the former coal stock yard of a closed Power Station in Medway, Kent. This was required as part of a site-wide programme of decommissioning following closure.

Soilfix designed and implemented a multi-disciplinary decommissioning and remediation scheme, including:

  • • High-pressure cleaning of all concrete surfaces (sides and partially covered base) to remove coal dusts using air-lances;
  • • Targeted excavation of coal from the base of the yard, pre-screening to remove oversize materials to a suitable grading for re-cycling;
  • • Continual dewatering of accumulated waters from the Coal Yard to facilitate excavations;
  • • Haulage of recovered coals in articulated bulker lorries (total 1,800 loads at average 2,500te / week);
  • • Off-site disposal of 4,500te coal contaminated sands to a local non-hazardous landfill in accordance with Duty of Care;
  • • Stabilisation/solidification treatment of 5,000te geotechnically unsuitable sand / coal fill using cement and site-won PFA as binding agents.  Recycled material utilised as a compacted sub-grade in the remediated coal yard for a future materials handling area;
  • • Verification of basal formation to support permit surrender, and performance testing of reclaimed materials to confirm suitable calorific value for reclamation; and,
  • • Health, Safety & Environmental controls to meet the client’s stringent requirements.

All works were completed on programme and budget, with no lost time incidents throughout the contract.
